Was Trump foreseen 100 years ago?

He has left the White House reluctantly, but was this prophetic observation about former President Donald Trump or about the American political system that produced him?

Some 100 years ago, an American journalist and literary critic, wrote this.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.

”One some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”

That was H.L Mencken, American journalist and literary critic, some 100 years ago in the Baltimore Evening Sun.

It is not stated if the iconic iconoclast of the early 20th century was a prophet, but observers note that the events at the Donald Trump White House give Mencken some credit.

The moron observation was the last line of a column that appeared July 26, 1920, in the Baltimore Evening Sun, a newspaper Mencken helped found, excoriating both candidates for president in the campaign of that year: Republican Warren G. Harding and the Democrat James M. Cox, both politicians from Ohio, where Harding served as a U.S. Senator and Cox as governor.

Observers of US politics say that so much of the scorn that Mencken heaped on the politicians of his day appears startlingly relevant to the politicians of today.

And He would have reveled in Trump and the upheaval he has caused in the American body politic.
