TCN upgrades circuit breakers at power stations nationwide

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it is rehabilitating and upgrading circuit breakers across transmission substations nationwide, starting with the 330/132 kilovolts Ajaokuta substation in Kogi State.

Circuit breakers protect power transformers from any abnormal conditions or fault that may occur within or from outside the network.

The General Manager, Public Affairs at TCN, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement on Sunday, said it will further improve bulk power transmission to distribution load centres for supply to consumers.

“The rehabilitation and replacement work which were officially flagged off at the 37 year old 330/132kV Ajaokuta Substation, Kogi State, marks TCN’s determination to ensure that all circuit breakers in its network are certified healthy and performs optimally,” the statement noted.

It said Ajaokuta substation is crucial in delivering power to distribution load centres of Abuja and Benin DisCos comprising Abuja, Lokoja, Anyigba, Okene, Okpella, and Benin, among others.

The company said the move to upgrade the circuit breakers despite routine maintenance by its engineers is to also ensure that they continue to perform optimally and eliminate any incident of sudden breakdown due to age.

The exercise will be extended to all substations in the country whose circuit breakers are 20 years and above, the company said, noting that proper retrofitting or replacement of the circuit breakers will ensure that they operate optimally for the next 15 to 20 years while officials are being re-trained through the rehabilitation exercise
