Sunday Igboho arrested in Benin Republic

There are strong indications that Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, may have been arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic on Monday night.

Although some of his supporters have confirmed his arrest, there is no official confirmation of the arrest, which has gone viral. One of them said Igboho had a Benin Republic passport and was on his way to Germany before he was arrested on Monday night.

Igboho’s lead counsel Yomi Aliyu has however said the activist was arrested with his wife, who is a German citizen, by the International Criminal Police Organisation.
In a statement on Tuesday, Alliyu said the Federal Government of Nigeria through INTERPOL got Adeyemo and his wife, arrested on Monday night at an airport in Benin Republic.

He described the arrest of his client as shocking and urged the government of Germany, Benin Republic and the international community “to rise up and curb the impunity of the Nigerian Government by refusing any application for extradition of our Client who already has application before the International Criminal Court duly acknowledged”.
