Lagos rewards 25 drivers, seeks reduction in road crashes

Lagos State Government has recognised 25 drivers who distinguished themselves in the profession. The awardees, who received gas cookers, were certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) and recognised at 2021 Drivers’ Appreciation Day and award ceremony in Ikeja, for having good sight and being Lagos Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS) compliant.

General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu,  said the awardees were selected to encourage others on the need to reduce road crashes in the state.
She stressed the need for training of drivers in the art  of driving because of their important role in the socio-economic life of the state.

Taimiyu urged transport unions to encourage their members to enroll for training, which will help in improving their well being as well as reduction in accidents and loss of life and property.

Speaking at the event themed: “Promoting a Safer Driving Culture on Lagos Roads,” the State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, said the event laid credence to safety of life for which the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has placed an ultimate premium.

He stressed that most crashes are unintended and unexpected, but could have been prevented by small differences in driving culture. Studies, he said, showed that about 75 per cent of road traffic crashes are attributed to the driver’s behaviour while on the steering.

According to him, the award was an attestation to the  State Government’s commitment towards encouraging and motivating trained professional drivers in the public and private sector, whose watchword has been safety, thereby reducing road crashes.
