Horrified Zabamari community buries 43 kinsmen killed by Boko Haram

Hundreds of Zabarmari villagers, joined by Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, yesterday, buried the 43 farmers slaughtered on their farms by Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday.

Most of the victims who were killed at Koshebe village in Mafa local government are originally from Zabarmari, a farming community in Jere local government area, which is also renowned for massive rice cultivation and local processing.

While addressing the community, Zulum expressed his deepest condolence and sympathies.

“First of all, accept my deepest sympathy over this carnage, once again, that affects all of us and every human with conscience.

“I am told some persons are still missing. We have been discussing with the military since yesterday, Insha Allah the remaining people will be traced soon,” Zulum said.

The Governor regretted Borno residents are faced with the dilemma of survival from hunger and Boko Haram, describing the situation as “sad”

But also yesterday the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Nigeria (OCHA) said no fewer than 110 farmers were slaughtered by Boko Haram on Saturday.

Edward Kallon, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria described the attack the deadliest on civilians this year.

Some locals blamed the attack on Boko Haram fighters, but Bulama Bukarti, an analyst with the Tony Blair Institute, said rival group the IS-affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) were more active in the area.

“ISWAP is the likely culprit”, he tweeted.
