Highlights of the Kanu arrest

* AGF Abubakar Malami: Self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed secessionist Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been rearrested through the collaborative efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services. He has been brought back to Nigeria in order to continue facing trial after disappearing while on bail regarding 11-count charge against him.

Recent steps taken by the Federal Government saw to the interception of the fugitive Kanu on Sunday the 27th day of June, 2021.

* At the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, Justice Binta Nyako ordered that he be remanded a Department of State Service (DSS) facility, pending the determination of his trial.

* Nnamdi Kanu at the court: I did not jump bail, My lord. I only went underground when the Nigerian armed forces raided my residence in Abia State, which led to the death of some people. So, I had to run for my safety,

* The counsel to the Attorney General of the Federation Shuaibu Labaran, urged the court for an order detaining the arrested IPOB leader at the DSS facility pending the hearing and determination of the matter. Justice Nyako, who granted the plea, adjourned the matter until July 26 for trial continuation.

* Lead counsel to IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor: We have just confirmed through a correspondence from the Federal High Court Abuja about the arrest and the extradition of my Client- Mazi Nnamdi Kanu by the Nigerian State. Regardless of the offences or charge against his client, he is still presumed innocent of the allegation under the law.

* Dean Hurlock, a spokesperson of the British High Commission, told TheCable that while they can confirm Kanu’s arrest, he was not picked up in the UK where he is based.
