COVID-19 Update: Infections stay above 100 mark in Nigeria

At 154, new infections in Nigeria remained high on Tuesday, with Lagos driving the spike. However, there were zero deaths. So far, there are

168867 confirmed cases, 164623 recoveries and 2125 deaths.

The 154 new cases were reported from 9 states: Lagos (119), Akwa Ibom (11), Rivers (6), Oyo (5), Ekiti (4), Ogun (4), FCT (2), Gombe (2) and Kwara (1)

* Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, says Nigeria is expecting 41,282,770 doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of September 2021. He said the AstraZeneca and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines are expected through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Assess Facility (COVAX) while the Jassen vaccines are expected from the African Union Commission.

He explained, “We have received communication for the delivery of the following vaccine shipments in the coming months. 3,924,000 doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca/Moderna by end of July or early August 2021 from the COVAX facility.

“3,930,910 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech/Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in August from the COVAX facility donated by the United States Government, 3,577,860 doses of Pfizer-Bio-N Tech/Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in Q3 from the COVAX facility

“29,850,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson (Jassen) COVID-19 vaccine by the end of September will arrive in batches from the African Union Commission.”

* The UK government has announced that Nigeria will be one of the first countries that will receive genomic sequencing support through the New Variant Assessment Platform (NVAP) Programme launched earlier this year by Public Health England to help countries identify, assess and track new variants of the novel coronavirus.

* The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has said there are signs of imminent third wave of coronavirus disease on the campus; there is an increased number of patients presenting COVID-19-related symptoms at its medical centre.
