27 May COVID-19 Update: Biden orders intelligence report on virus origin
United States President, Joe Biden, has ordered intelligence agencies to investigate the emergence of Covid-19, amid growing controversy about the virus’s origins. Covid-19 was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.
In a statement, Biden asked US intelligence groups to “redouble their efforts” and report to him within 90 days.
More than 168 million cases have since been confirmed worldwide and at least 3.5 million deaths reported.
But recent US media reports suggest growing evidence the virus could instead have emerged from a laboratory in China.
Beijing has condemned the reports and suggested it could have come from a US laboratory instead.
* Nigeria caseload: 48 new cases were reported on Wednesday, taking the tally to 166,146 confirmed cases; 156,529 recoveries and 2,071 deaths.
The new cases were reported as follows: Lagos-22, Rivers-11, Enugu-11, Kaduna-2, FCT-1, and Gombe-1.
