COVID-19: Nigeria unsure of vaccine date

Health Minister Osagie Ehanire says the Federal Government is unable to put a date on when the expected COVID-19 vaccines would be delivered to Nigeria. He spoke after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He spoke on the day Nigeria recorded 655 new cases and 11 deaths, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 153842, with 130, 818 recoveries and 1885 deaths.

The 655 new cases were reported from 21 states: Lagos (240), Ogun (88), Rivers (56), FCT (51), Kaduna (43), Kano (25), Plateau (21), Taraba (19), Edo (17), Abia (15), Delta (13), Nasarawa (11), Akwa Ibom (10), Kwara (10), Oyo (10), Kebbi (9), Borno (5), Bayelsa (4), Gombe (4), Ekiti (2), and Osun (2)

* African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim) has approved $2 billion to support the purchase of 270 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for African countries, including Nigeria.

* Ghana has become the first country to receive coronavirus vaccines through the Covax vaccine-sharing initiative. A delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Accra on Wednesday. The first recipients are due to be healthcare workers.

* A review by US regulators of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine has found it is safe and effective. It paves the way for it to become the third Covid-19 vaccine to be authorised in the US, possibly within days.
