Pope Francis is under observation after undergoing colon surgery on Sunday, according to Vatican City officials. The head of the Catholic Church, 84, was transported to Gemelli Policlinic in Rome after Sunday’s Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square.

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for prayers for the Pope.

In a get-well message to the Pope, Buhari, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, prayed for quick recovery for the Pontiff.

“The President called for prayers from Nigerians and the global community as the Pontiff goes in for this routine operation. He wishes him a quick recovery”, the statement said.
