🌍 Highlights of FEC Meeting: 10/02

The Federal Executive Council chaired by President Buhari on Wednesday approved contracts worth over N26.7 billion for projects under the ministries of Information and Culture; Communication and Digital Economy, and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development. The approvals include:

* About N8.98 billion for a new National ICT park in the FCT to coordinate public and private ICT hubs in the country; FG to release the timelines for the replacement of BVN with NIN in bank accounts

* A new National Policy on Aging which would take care of the needs of the aged people in the country.

* N8.43 billion for the implementation of Damaturu water supply scheme

* About N9.43 billion to complete the digital switchover, which had previously missed the deadline set for implementation.

* Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between the ministry and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Bankers Committee for the renovation of the National Theatre, Iganmu Lagos. CBN is expected to provide about N21. 89 billion for the refurbishment of the National Theatre and is expected to manage it for few years before handing it over to the government.

* Approved the medium-term debt strategy, which reversed concentration on foreign loans in favour of long term domestic borrowings from 2020 to 2023.

 

🌍 Oil Monitor: Oil prices fell on Thursday, giving up some of the recent strong gains on profit-taking and speculation that the market’s strength could tempt producers like Saudi Arabia to reduce output by less.

* Brent crude fell 35 cents, or 0.6%, to $61.12 a barrel, as of 0805 GMT, after touching its highest since January 2020 on Wednesday.

🌍 COVID-19 Update: On Wednesday, Nigeria reported 1131 new cases and 8 deaths. There are now 142,578 confirmed cases, 116947 recoveries and 1702 deaths.

* The World Health Organization recommends using the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca even in countries tackling new variants of coronavirus.

🌍 The Senate has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), the service chiefs, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, to rejig the nation’s security architecture for more effective strategy to tackle the security challenges of the country.

* Gbajabiamila, expresses concern about worsening insecurity that has prompted the people to resort to self-help to stay alive and protect their assets.

* Senate confirms the nominations of Ahmed Lawan Kuru; and Bello Hassan as Managing Directors of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigerian (AMCON); and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), respectively.
