COVID-19 Update: Infections soar in Nigeria

Nigeria on Wednesday reported a new high of 268 infections, 25 recoveries and zero deaths.  So, there are now 215164 confirmed cases, 207520 recoveries and 2980 deaths.

The 268 new cases are reported from 10 States: Lagos (225), Rivers (17), Enugu (10), Edo (5), Bauchi (3), Ogun (3), Oyo (2), Kaduna (1), Bayelsa (1), Delta (1)

* The Federal Government says it has started rejecting COVID-19 vaccines with short shelf life or those that cannot be delivered on time.

Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said this while reacting to the report that one million COVID vaccines in the country have expired.

Citing at least two sources, Reuters had reported that the expired doses supplied via COVAX, the dose-sharing facility led by the GAVI vaccine alliance, were made by AstraZeneca (AZN.L) and delivered from Europe.

* Saudi Arabia has suspended flights  from Nigeria into the Kingdom over concerns of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19.

* The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the Omicron COVID variant has now been detected in 57 countries.
