🌎Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima have been sworn in as the president and vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They are the 16th president and 14th vice-president of Africa’s most populous country. They were sworn in on Monday at the Eagle Square in the federal capital territory (FCT) by Olukayade Ariwoola, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), in the presence of former President Buhari and their family members. Former president Buhari has left Abuja for Daura, his hometown.

🌎Oil prices were steady on Monday after U.S. leaders reached a tentative debt ceiling deal, possibly averting a default in the world’s largest economy and oil consumer, but concerns about further interest rate hikes capped gains. Brent crude futures climbed 14 cents, or 0.2%, to $77.09 a barrel by 0905 GMT

🌎The House of Representatives, in an emergency session on Sunday, increased the limit within which the federal government can borrow from the Central Bank of Nigeria, thereby amending section 38 of the CBN Act.

🌎The Nigerian Navy on Sunday returned a Norwegian-registered vessel, MT Heroic Idun, caught attempting to steal Nigeria’s crude oil in August 2022, after fulfilling some conditions. The navy arrested the oil tanker and its 26 Indian, Pilipino, Sri Lankan and Polish nationals in August 2022, and later convicted them in court and fined $15 million.

🌎HH Capital Limited, a Company founded by the Board Chairman of UBA Plc Mr. Tony Elumelu has acquired additional 19.338,220 million shares worth N162.44 million in the company. With the acquisition, HH Capital has increased its number of shares from 140,843,816 units of shares as of December 31, 2022, to 230,182, 036 units. Elumelu the Pan African bank’s single largest shareholder, now accounts for about 7.22% of its total shareholding structure.

🌎Security Stories: Rev. Keoleh Saleh, the President of the Baptist Conference in Plateau State, says that 50 members of the church, including a pastor, were killed in recent attacks in Mangu and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. Saleh disclosed this on Sunday in Jos, adding that over 500 of its members were also displaced.

 

🌎Russia-Ukraine War: Ukrainian air defenses shot down dozens of cruise missiles and drones launched at Kyiv Monday — the 15th day this month that the capital has been targeted. In the south, Ukrainian officials reported a series of explosions Sunday in and around the Russian-occupied cities of Berdiansk and Mariupol.
* Ukraine’s top general has hinted his country’s counteroffensive could be imminent. The campaign has remained shrouded in mystery, likely by design.
*Belarus’ president has claimed nuclear weapons would be provided to nations willing to join Minsk’s alliance with Moscow. It comes days after he said the transfer had begun of some tactical nuclear weapons from Russia to Belarus.
* The Russian ambassador to the UK, Andrei Kelin, told the UK’s BBC that Russia had “enormous resources and we haven’t just started yet to act very seriously”.
